Goals

Tell me not, in mournful numbers,
Life is but an empty dream! --
For the soul is dead that slumbers,
And things are not what they seem.

Life is real! Life is earnest!
And the grave is not its goal;
Dust thou art, to dust returnest,
Was not spoken of the soul.

                    -Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

     Life is.... Well I don't really know what life is, but I know it seems pretty long. And throughout life there are a lot of places to go and a lot of people to see. Everyday contains something to do, a task to accomplish. It's easy to be caught up in the tiny mundane tasks we do each day and not pursue any real goals. Life without goals is boring. Imagine a soccer game without goals, it would be so boring. But the score would still be 0-0. Ha. Ha. But seriously, goals are the things that drive us! We wouldn't be laboring in our school classes if they didn't serve an ultimate purpose- to graduate and get a job. We wouldn't go to Church if we weren't aiming for life with God again. As Mr. Longfellow said "the grave is not [life's] goal." We have greater things in store than being buried six feet under! Death isn't even the end result, because the things that we do determine our life after death. So it would help us all to think about the goals we want to achieve. What do we really want to do with the time that we have? If we're chasing after things we don't want or not doing anything at all we are wasting our time. And if we are wasting our time, than we are wasting our lives. Life is not given to us so that we can rack up the highest score on Draw Something or Temple Run. Life is for us to get closer to God and chase our dreams along the way. The pleasures of pictionary and running with a golden idol from gorillas are always appreciated as fun sidenotes, but these useless pleasures are not the goal of life. Let us all determine what we really want to do in life. Then lets do it.
